TOXICITY

Mild everyday toxicity is made up on micro-aggressions in day-to-day scenarios, too light to be classified as discrimination and harassment, which are crimes. Main forms are disrespect, abusive behavior, cut-throat competitiveness, narcissism, cronyism, unethical behavior. It lowers employee engagement, and constitutes toxic culture.

Talented employees cannot express their potential and quit. Employees talk about it outside, which harms employer branding.

Studies show employees don't speak because of

  • fear: lack of trust to HR, fear it will affect their career or to be mistaken.
  • Doubt that HR will take any action, or not know that they took action
(see: WBI 2021 Survey: Toxicity statistics in US companies; Negative outcome)
  • To empower them to speak up about toxicity, you need to give them the protection of anonymity
  • To have them spread the word that it works, you need to inform them what action you took upon their report

LIABILITY & MISUSE

Avoiding misuse requires catching and deflecting behavior that looks suspicious.
